From Choosing a Telescope to Stargazing: Klein-Winternheim, Germany

About: At clear skies we will celebrate the 100 Hours of Astronomy event with a telescope workshop followed by an observation. Anyone with a device of their own can join us in our observatory on January 11 at 4:30 pm (UTC+1). We will be offering an individual counseling on how to set it up and observe the night sky. In addition, for those who do not yet own a telescope and plan to purchase one, our experts will provide some useful tips tailored to the specific personal needs. Later that same evening (5:30 pm, UTC+1) we will engage our visitors in a sky observation through our 12" Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope. The Moon, Mars and Uranus will be a main subject of the observation. Simultaneously, while some can observe the Pleiades through a pair of binoculars, we will be telling a few stories about the special place this star cluster has taken in many different cultures throughout early time periods.

10 January: Guided observatory tour - Guided tour through Munich public observatory, including planetarium show, explanations in the exhibition and telescope usage - observing only in good weather conditions. Event runs rain or shine and is held in German Language!
Starting 8 p.m., duration about 2h.
10 January: Glowing moon for early birds (GlĂĽhender Mond fĂĽr FrĂĽhaufsteher) - Guided tour through the Munich Public Observatory, including planetarium show and a short lecture. Topic: Glowing moon for early birds (GlĂĽhender Mond fĂĽr FrĂĽhaufsteher) for preparation of Lunar Eclipse in morning of Jan 21st. Tour is in German language! Beginning at 4 p.m., duration 1,5h
11 January: Pluto and the Kuiper belt - Lecture in German language! Beginning 8 p.m., admission 7.30 p.m.
Pluto, "only" labelled as a dwarf planet, turned out to be quite complex in the machine eyes of NASA's "New Horizons" probe. Now the probe has whizzed past the asteroid 2014 MU69, named "Ultima Thule". Even though they are tiny, we can learn a lot from the transneptunian dwarfs and asteroids.
