Sidewalk Astronomers Astronomers without Borders

Founded in 1968 by John Dobson, The Sidewalk Astronomers group (SWA) now has many members around the world. The primary goal of organisation is to give people a chance to observe celestial objects through good-sized telescopes and to provide information concerning all areas of Astronomy. SWA groups set up telescopes in busy places where people are likely to be passing by in order to share the wonders of the night sky to all those interested.

Astronomers Without Borders is people meeting among the stars. It is only natural to do so. After all, we all share the same sky. The star-filled sky fascinates us all. People have gazed upward at it in wonder and awe for thousands of years. Regardless of earthly differences in culture, nationality or religion, the night sky is a common meeting ground for all of Earth's inhabitants. The boundaries we place between us vanish when we look skyward. Whoever, whatever or wherever we are, we all share the same sky.

Cosmic Diary

UNAWE

Cosmic Diary will allow you to see what it is like to be an astronomer. Our astronomers will blog in text and include images about their, current work, life and hobbies. They will also include information relating to their latest research projects and the challenges they face.

Universe Awareness (UNAWE) is an international programme that exposes very young children in under-privileged environments to the scale and beauty fo the Universe. UNAWE illustrates the multicultural origins of modern astronomy in an effort to broaden children's minds, awaken their curiosity in science and stimulate global citizenship and tolerance.

Dark Sky Awareness

Galileo Teacher Training Program

The arc of the Milky Way seen from a truly dark site is part of our planets cultural and natural heritage. It is now more urgent than ever to preserve & protect dark night skies in places such as urban cultural landscapes, national parks and sites connected with astronomical observations.

Yuri's Night 2009

Galaxy Zoo

Yuri's Night is a worldwide annual celebration of humanity's achievements in space. Traditionally held on April 12th, the anniversary of Yuri Gagarin's first manned launch and the launch of the first space shuttle, Yuri's Night is being held from April 4-12 in 2009 to provide a wider variety of event opportunities. Over 50 countries hosted nearly 200 Yuri's Night events last year, including celebrations at the NASA Ames Research Center, Russia, and the South Pole. Yuri's Night is extremely proud to be working with the 100 Hours of Astronomy to increase participation in astronomical fields and awareness of astronomy and outer space.

Galaxy Zoo Welcome to Galaxy Zoo, where you can help astronomers explore the Universe. The Galaxy Zoo files contain almost a quarter of a million galaxies which have been imaged with a camera attached to a robotic telescope (the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, no less). In order to understand how these galaxies and our own formed, we need your help to classify them according to their shapes, a task at which your brain is better than even the fastest computer. 100 Hours of Astronomy takes place this weekend. There are events taking place right across the globe, but here at Galaxy Zoo we have a challenge for you. Can we make 1 million classification clicks in the 100 hours? The race is on...

CICLOPS celebrates Galileo and his work along with the 100 Hours of Astronomy global star party by making available some of its most memorable images and movies of Saturn, its satellites and rings. There are many more activities planned at CICLOPS which include playing Golf around Saturn and teeing-off from one of the moons. Check out the Space Art from many prominent astronomical artists, read 10 years' worth of the 'Captain's Log' written by Carolyn Porco, the Imaging Team Learder.  Visit the online Science Centre and become a member of the CICLOPS Alliance.
