I want to plan an event in my community. What should I do?
Answer
There are many ways that people can participate in 100 Hours of Astronomy. The goal is to bring astronomy out in to the public to as many people as possible.
Why? To inspire children and adults into taking a closer interest in the sky above them and the wonderous and diverse objects it contains. This also helps to show the importance astronomy plays in their daily lives. The way people choose to participate is up to them but we do have suggestions and programs for you to be a part of. We expect thousands of events around the world to be taking place during the 100 Hours of Astronomy. Many of these events have been planned by our task team in cooperation with national committees. However, the vast majority of planned public events will be hosted by local astronomy clubs, science facilities, and interested groups who want to share their fascination of the sky, with others. The 100 Hours of Astronomy ‘Events’ page highlights the major events that have already been planned by the 100 Hours task group.
In the end, what you and your community do is for you to decide. Some groups are planning truly unique events based on their cultures, interests, resources, and local circumstances. The majority of the events are public outreach programs taking advantage of the high profile that the 100 Hours of Astronomy has to offer over the four day period. Our Forum will be active soon and the discussions there might give you some ideas or allow you to discuss your own thoughts with others.
