McDonald Observatory, located atop Mount Locke and Mount Fowlkes in the Davis Mountains of West Texas at an altitude of 2,070 meters, is the research facility for the University of Texas at Austin Astronomy department. The observatory is one of the world's leading centers for astronomical research, teaching, and public education and outreach, and offer some of the darkest night skies in the continental United States.
McDonald Observatory operates three major research telescopes (2.1 m, 2.7 m and 9.2 m), and is a node on the ROTSE and MONET network of telescopes. The Bash Visitors Center conducts an array of world-class outreach programs for approximately 60,000 annual visitors.
