100 Hours of Astronomy Event - U.S. Naval Observatory IYA 2009 Open House

100 Hours of Astronomy Event
Number of telescopes and binoculars: 22
Number of amateur participants: 26
Number of public observing (best estimate): 9000
Public comments/impressions: "Wow", "Cool", Awesome", "Thank you so much for doing this", "Honey, he *made* that telescope", "Check out this amazing picture of Saturn...wait, that's the *real* Saturn?" etc.
Viewing conditions: A bit breezy, otherwise superb!
Objects viewed: Sun, Moon, Saturn, various double stars, M42.
Types of telescopes used: 15-inch home-built Dobsonian, 12-inch Clark/Saegmuller rerfactor, 12-inch LightBridge, 12-inch LX200, Celestron 11, 10-inch Europa Newtonian, several 8-inch SCT's and Newtonian/Dobsonians, many smaller instruments.
Organizer Comments: An amazing turnout considering we were up against the Cherry Blossom Festival and the "Jeopardy" regional tryouts. :-)

The crowds were interested, respectful, eager to learn, enthusiastic despite long lines to get to some of the telescopes, and everybody had a good time. I had two scopes set up on the lawn, my 80mm Antares Sentinel on an iOptron Cube mount and my 25-year old home-built 8-inch Dobsonian, "Ol' Blue Eye". Between 18:00 - 2200 I never had fewer than 20 people in line for each scope. I'd say 90% of the people who passed through had never looked through a telescope before!

The event far exceeded our wildest expectations!

Method used to estimate public attendance: "Clicker" counter at main entry area. "Official" count was 8336, but during peak entry times it wasn't possible to count everyone. We estimate at least a 10% undercount.
