Description: The Very Large Array (VLA) is the world's most versatile and widely-used radio telescope. Its 27, 230-ton dish antennas are spread across the high desert of western New Mexico in the shape of a "Y," with the arms of the "Y" 13 miles (21 km) long. Astronomers from around the world use the VLA to make finely-detailed images of a wide range of astronomical objects as seen at radio wavelengths.
