Type of observatory: Gamma ray
Description: NASA's Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope observes the highest energy emissions from pulsars, gamma-ray bursts, and black holes feeding in the centers of distant galaxies. Fermi's main instrument, the Large Area Telescope, operates by tracking the matter and antimatter formed within the device when gamma rays strike it. In its first few months, Fermi has discovered a new class of pulsars, observed the highest-energy gamma-ray burst, and made the best-ever image of the sky in gamma-ray light. Fermi launched into a 340-mile-high Earth orbit in mid-2008.
Location: Space/USA Latitude: +38.998994 Longitude: -76.853356
