Type of observatory: millimetre/submillimetre
Description: The ALMA Observatory will be a (sub)millimeter wave interferometer consisting of at least 66 antennas located on the Chajnantor Altiplano in the Atacama Desert of northern Chile at 5000m altitude. It will be the leading astronomical instrument for observing the cool Universe – the molecular gas and dust that constitute the building blocks of stars, planetary systems, galaxies, and of life itself. ALMA is a partnership between the scientific communities of East Asia, Europe and North America with Chile.
